Google's Web Install API: A New Era for Progressive Web Apps |
Streamlining PWA Installation Across Browsers |
Google is introducing the Web Install API, a feature poised to revolutionize how users install Progressive Web Apps (PWAs).
Developed in collaboration with Microsoft Edge engineers, this initiative enhances the Chromium project, enabling websites to facilitate PWA installations directly from their pages, bypassing traditional browser prompts or app stores.
The Web Install API empowers websites to install their own PWAs or those from other sites, allowing app catalogs and directories to offer install buttons for users to add web apps across desktop browsers.
Importantly, browsers will always seek user confirmation before any installation, ensuring that websites cannot install unsafe or unlisted content without consent.
Upon visiting a supported website, users may encounter a prompt to install a web app, resembling the current Chrome installation experience but extending to trusted third-party sites like app directories.
Each installation still requires user approval, maintaining security and user control.
As a shared web standard, the Web Install API benefits from input by both the Chrome and Microsoft Edge teams.
Currently functional in desktop versions of Chrome and Edge, plans are underway to extend support to Android.
While Firefox and Safari have yet to implement support, they are actively participating in ongoing discussions within web standards groups.
To experience this feature, users can enable the "Web App Installation API" flag in Chrome or Edge version 139 or higher.
After activation, testing is possible on demo pages such as the Microsoft Edge Web App Store demo.
The Web Install API aims to simplify the discovery and installation of web apps across various browsers, reducing reliance on app stores and granting users greater control over their app installations.
By streamlining the PWA installation process, this development underscores the industry's commitment to enhancing user experience and promoting the adoption of web applications. |
