Doomscrolling in the Bathroom: A Risky Habit for Your Health |
Extended smartphone use on the toilet may increase the risk of hemorrhoids |
In today's digital age, it's common to bring our smartphones everywhere, including the bathroom.
However, this habit, often referred to as doomscrolling, could have unintended health consequences. Recent research indicates that prolonged sitting on the toilet while engaged with a mobile phone may elevate the risk of developing hemorrhoids.
A study involving 125 adults undergoing colonoscopy screenings revealed that 66% admitted to using their smartphones during bathroom visits. Notably, 37% of these individuals spent over five minutes per session on the toilet, compared to just 7% of non-users. After adjusting for factors like age, sex, and lifestyle habits, the findings showed a 46% increased risk of hemorrhoids among those who used their phones in the bathroom.
Hemorrhoids, characterized by swollen veins in the anus and rectum, can cause discomfort and bleeding. Prolonged sitting, especially on a toilet seat, increases pressure in the anal region, contributing to the development of this condition.
Moreover, the distraction provided by smartphones can lead individuals to lose track of time, inadvertently extending their bathroom stays. To mitigate these risks, health experts recommend limiting time spent on the toilet and avoiding the use of mobile phones during bathroom visits.
By being mindful of our habits, we can protect our health and well-being. |
